Join us for a one-day condensed training on the Shoreline Cleanup Assessment Technique (SCAT), taught by IOSA Board Member and 35+ year NOAA veteran Gary Shigenaka, along with representatives from the Washington Department of Ecology.
In spill response, SCAT is a systematic method for surveying shorelines affected by an oil spill to document the extent of oiling and inform cleanup decisions. SCAT teams use standardized terminology and data collection methods to evaluate shoreline conditions, recommend cleanup strategies, and determine when cleanup operations are complete.
This one-day course aims to cover the following:

Foundation of SCAT: Understanding the purpose and process of SCAT, including its role within the ICS system

Coastal Characteristics: Exploring different coastal environments of San Juan County, their physical processes, and how these factors influence oiling and cleanup

Shoreline Oiling: Analyzing the extent and degree of oiling on different types of shorelines

SCAT Forms and Data: Learning to conduct surveys and accurately complete standardized SCAT forms to record observations

Treatment Strategies: Developing appropriate recommendations for shoreline cleanup methods and setting achievable cleanup endpoints
Stakeholder Collaboration: Working with various agencies and stakeholders to gain agreement on cleanup objectives and measure cleanup success

Practical Applications: Engaging in hands-on exercises and practical sessions at suitable shoreline locations
